In 1999, a federal report stated that 850,000 students were getting home schooled. 850,000 students make up roughly 4% of the student population in the United States from grades, kindergarten through twelfth grade. John Could and Jodie Morse stated the importance of this in the article by saying “Aside from money, the drain of families is eroding something more precious: public confidence in the schools.” The statement emphasizes two pieces of information; parents who choose alternative schooling other than public schooling decrease the amount of money that goes into the public school system. The statement also says, the more parents who begin to take their kids out of the public school system, and have success, the more other parents will want to do the same. In turn, parents will begin to wonder why so many kids are being pulled out of the public school system to be home schooled, and pull their kids out to be home schooled. Home schooling for some parents is a great alternative to the public school system when they feel like they can no long trust the public school system to provide the education that the parents believe their child should be provided.

The public school system is free to those who pay property taxes, and provides a place to send children to obtain an education. Home schooling is an alternative to the public school system that allows a parent(s) the comfort of teaching a child at home under the parents own time. If someone has a problem with the public school system this article helps to show there are alternatives to the public school system. Home schooling has drawbacks as well, and can be taxing on the parents with the amount of time needed to spend at home. The article also proves that with the increased number of students who are being home schooled, or even with private schooled, the money the public school system receives from the government is less which could drastically make conditions in public school systems worse. The article shows that more parents are choosing the alternative to public school system, which is home schooling, because the parents feel like the public school system is failing to provide the children with a proper education.
